Getting started

๐Ÿ“– 6-minute read ยท Beginner

This takes you from no account to your first tagged elements in Revit. It should take about half an hour, most of which is Revit restarting.

What you are signing up for today. STING Tools is the Revit plugin โ€” it runs on your workstation and does not need an internet connection to work. The Planscape cloud platform and the mobile site app are still in development. Your trial gives you the plugin.

Step 1 โ€” Create your account

Go to planscape.build/signup. You need a work email, your name, your firm's name, and the country you work in.

The country matters. It sets the currency you will be billed in โ€” Uganda gives you Ugandan shillings and mobile money, Kenya gives Kenyan shillings, and so on. Firms outside East Africa are billed in US dollars by card. You cannot change this later without contacting us, so pick the country your firm actually invoices from.

No payment card is asked for, and none is stored. Your 14-day trial starts the moment you sign up.

Step 2 โ€” Confirm your email

We send a link to the address you signed up with. Click it to confirm the address is yours.

If nothing arrives within a few minutes, check the spam folder. If it is not there either, email hello@planscape.build and we will sort it out.

Step 3 โ€” Get STING Tools

Reply to your welcome email, or write to hello@planscape.build, and we will send you the installer along with your licence.

We are building a download area. Until it is live, the plugin comes by email. It is a manual step at our end, so allow a working day โ€” and say which version of Revit you are running (2025, 2026 or 2027) so we send the right build.

Step 4 โ€” Install it

Full detail, including what to do when it does not appear, is in Installing STING Tools in Revit. In short:

  1. Close Revit.
  2. Unzip what we sent you.
  3. Copy the contents into your Revit add-ins folder โ€” press Win + R and paste %APPDATA%\Autodesk\Revit\Addins\ to find it, then open the folder for your Revit version.
  4. Start Revit. If it asks whether to load the add-in, choose Always Load.

You should now see a STING Tools tab on the ribbon, and a panel docked to the right of the drawing area.

Step 5 โ€” Prepare the project

Open a project you know well. Not one with a deadline this week.

On the panel, go to the SETUP tab and run Params Check. This confirms the shared parameters STING relies on are present and correctly attached to the right categories. On a model that has been through several hands, this is where you find out something is missing โ€” better now than halfway through a tagging run.

If it reports gaps, Project Setup Wizard on the same tab walks through fixing them in order.

Step 6 โ€” Tag something

Open a floor plan with some services on it.

  1. SELECT tab › Lgt. That selects every lighting fixture in the view.
  2. TAGGING tab › Pre-Audit. This changes nothing โ€” it reports what a tagging run would do and what it would struggle with.
  3. Read it. If it looks right, click Auto Tag.
  4. Not what you expected? Undo puts the model back.

That loop โ€” select, audit, tag, check โ€” is how the tool is meant to be used day to day. The panel, tab by tab explains what else is there.

Step 7 โ€” Decide before day 14

The trial runs 14 days from signup with everything switched on. There is no card on file, so nothing happens automatically at the end โ€” the tools simply stop until you choose a plan.

When you are ready, sign in at planscape.build/login and pick a plan from your account page. East African firms pay by mobile money in local currency; everyone else pays by card. Details in Trial, plans and payment.
